Kyrgyzstan joins CIS program to support children's reading

Programs will be developed in CIS to support reading by children and youth. It was announced at a regular meeting of the Interstate Council for Cooperation in the Sphere of Periodicals, Book Publishing, Book Distribution and Printing.

The meeting was attended by specialists from Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and the CIS Executive Committee.

The program to support children and youth reading, as the representatives of the Russian Federation said, has already been developed in Russia. It provides for «the implementation of a set of interrelated measures aimed at increasing reading activity and developing the cultural and reading competencies of children and youth.» The document will be presented in the near future.

Representatives of more than 50 countries of the world, including Kyrgyzstan, took part in the International Children’s Books Congress.

The results of the 18th International Competition «Book Art» of the CIS countries have been summed up. The next one will take place under the sign of the Year of Folk Art and Cultural Heritage.

The members of the Interstate Council also discussed issues related to the competition among bookselling enterprises of partner countries, events in the field of periodicals, book publishing, book distribution dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the CIS, considered a number of other topics, including holding of annual events aimed at the development of reading among the children and youth.
