EU and Kyrgyzstan discuss women's representation in Parliament

As part of the visit to Kyrgyzstan, EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala and the Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore met with the President Sadyr Japarov, representatives of civil society, head of the State Committee for National Security Kamchybek Tashiev, Ombudsman Tokon Mamytov and the Foreign Minister Ruslan Kazakbaev.

«We talked about the percentage of women in the Kyrgyz parliament,» Eamon Gilmore, the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, told reporters.

The issue how representation of women in the Parliament of Kyrgyzstan could be achieved, taking into account the new mixed electoral system, has been also raised. In addition, the EU is concerned about the ambitious goal of the Cabinet of Ministers to carry out inventory of legislation in a short time.

«We also raised the issue of the law on trade unions, the Criminal Procedure Code, the laws on NGOs and protection from false information. We noted that the importance of civil society is very high, there should be space for expressing thoughts, delivering news. The issue of human rights and democracy is at the heart of the relationship we have with our partners,» Eamon Gilmore said.
