Kassym-Jomart Tokayev assumes post of President of Kazakhstan

Former Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, has assumed the post of President of the country.

He took the oath in the building of the Majilis of the republic.

The longtime leader of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, resigned and handed over his powers to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is 66 years old. He graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Beijing Linguistic Institute (PRC), Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

After graduation from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, he worked in the central office of the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, in foreign offices.

In 2003-2007 — Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

Since 2007 — Chairman of the Senate of Parliament.

In March 2011, he was appointed Deputy UN Secretary-General, head of the UN Office in Geneva.

In October 2013, he was elected a Chairman of the Senate of Parliament.

On September 14, 2017 he was re-elected the Chairman of the Senate of Parliament.
