3,000 apple trees to be planted at schools of Kyrgyzstan to improve school meals

About 3,000 fruit trees will be planted at schools of Kyrgyzstan in honor of the International School Meals Day. The UN World Food Program (WFP) Office in the Kyrgyz Republic reported.

With the support of WFP, 525 schools in the country have introduced hot meals and provide quality lunches to more than 145,000 primary school students, and the state provides legal support to expand the hot meals program.

In honor of the International School Meals Day, WFP, together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, begins planting of about 3,000 apple trees at 15 schools in Chui region. Fruits will be used to improve school meals.

The first 120 seedlings were planted at the secondary school 1 named after Kudryashov in Orlovka village.

«Such school gardens will help develop life skills and increase environmental responsibility. It is important for us to show how every inhabitant of the planet, even the smallest, can contribute to global efforts to eradicate hunger,» said Assistant FAO Representative in Kyrgyzstan Dinara Rakhmanova.
