Court reviews sentence of Altynbek Muraliev accused of treason

The Bishkek City Court reviewed sentence of Altynbek Muraliev, the son of the former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Amangeldi Muraliev, who was accused of espionage. The court informed 24.kg news agency.

Altynbek Muraliev was sentenced to 22 years in prison with confiscation of property. In connection with the entry into force of the new editions of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code, the lawyers of the convict filed a motion to review the case under newly discovered evidence. The court reduced the sentence by seven years.

The second person involved in the case was initially sentenced to four years in prison. However, he was amnestied and released in the courtroom.

Altynbek Muraliev is the ex-head of the International Cooperation Department of the Government’s Executive Office. He was accused of transfer of information constituting official secrets to foreign organizations. He was taken into custody on November 4, 2014.

Altynbek Muraliev pleaded not guilty. He claims that he has never transferred secret information to representatives of other states. Moreover, he claims that he was forced to confess under pressure during the first hours after arrest.
