Main cause of smog in Bishkek - furnaces of HPP and inner suburbs

Not vehicles but furnaces of the Bishkek Heating and Power Plant and stoves of the inner suburbs of the city play the main role in the formation of smog over Bishkek. The head of the Department of Meteorology, Ecology and Environmental Protection of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University Andrei Podrezov told at a press conference.

According to the professional station of the Department of Meteorology at the university, a sharp increase in the level of pollution began on November 14, when snow fell, the HPP started operating at full capacity and the inner suburbs began to heat houses.

«Excess of maximum concentration limit reached 17,5. This situation lasted until the thaw. But the dust pollution did not drop below the maximum permissible level,» the expert noted.

Andrei Podrezov added that road transport also affected air pollution, but it emited a small amount of suspended particles.

Dust plays a major role in the formation of smog. Its two main sources in the city are the HPP and stoves of the inner suburbs.

«Why does the smog appear and then almost disappear? It depends on the weather. Smog is formed at low air temperature and in calm weather. Cold air squeezes the warm one up, and the stoves in the inner suburbs are low, the smoke comes out not so heated, cannot rise, rests on the warm air and spreads all over the city. The three-meter pipe of the HPP allows to emit smoke higher, but nevertheless the level of pollution remains high,» he added.
