Case of Azimzhan Askarov not to be reviewed in Kyrgyzstan

The criminal case against a human rights defender, Azimzhan Askarov, sentenced to life imprisonment, will not be reviewed. The State Penitentiary Service of Kyrgyzstan informed 24.kg news agency.

According to the agency, documents on the review of prisoners ’cases under the new Criminal Code are prepared by the State Penitentiary Service for their sending to court. But the Azimzhan Askarov’s case is not included in this list. As the state service explained, Azimzhan Askarov was recognized by the courts of all instances guilty of crimes that do not have a statute of limitations. The human rights activist, as it was previously reported, will not apply to the Supreme Court, since he does not believe in the objectivity of the judges.

Azimzhan Askarov was sentenced to life imprisonment. He is accused of inciting ethnic hatred and murder of a policeman during the June events in the south of the country in 2010. Azimzhan Askarov does not admit his guilt.
