Belarus abolishes excess examination of goods from EEU countries

Belarus will no longer apply additional conformity assessment of goods from the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union. Only compliance with technical regulations will be checked, the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) said.

According to it, additional sanitary and hygienic examination of certain types of goods imported into EEU from third countries was previously applied in Belarus. Suppliers were forced to re-conduct tests that were done as part of the procedures for confirming products’ conformity with the technical regulations of the union.

Back in November 2017, the EEC Board decided that the procedure was redundant, and informed Belarus about the need to eliminate it.

A similar position was taken by the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on July 27, 2018, suggesting the Belarusian side to cancel the administrative procedure before January 1, 2019.

«As a result of joint work, the barrier has been removed, additional procedures for goods from the EEU states will not be applied anymore in Belarus. A pilot project is being implemented to create a system for informing about products that do not meet the requirements of the technical regulations of the union, which will help limit the circulation of unsafe products in the internal market of EEU,» said Karine Minasyan, Member of the Board, Minister in charge of Domestic Markets, Information Support, Information and Communication Technologies of EEC.

As of January 1, 2019, there are 71 obstacles in the domestic market of the EEU, including 16 barriers, 38 restrictions and 17 confiscations. At least 19 obstacles have been detected and 13 obstacles have been removed in 2018.
