Day of Remembrance of Batken Soldiers established in Kyrgyzstan

The Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan Mukhammedkaly Abylgaziev signed a resolution on establishing the Day of Honoring and Remembrance of those killed during the performance of military and official duty on protection of the territorial integrity of Kyrgyzstan during the Batken events of 1999-2000.

It states that the memorial date will be marked annually on October 26.

Recall, the issue of establishing the date was raised by the government in 2009. The document was signed on December 25, 2018.

The Batken events occurred in 1999-2000. They were caused by attempts of the militants of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) to penetrate into the territory of Uzbekistan from Tajikistan through the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic. According to official data, 51 Kyrgyz soldiers died during the clashes and more than 70 were injured.
