EEU countries to accent products with GMO in large print

Additional requirements for labeling products with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have been introduced in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union since December 26. The Eurasian Economic Commission reported.

According to it, the new standards included in the union’s technical regulations «Food products in part of its labeling» will allow buyers to make a more informed choice of food products. The inscription «GMO» will now be put in large print next to the single circulation mark of products on the all-Union market — EAC. The GMO sign should correspond in form and size to the EAC sign.

The document was adopted by the Eurasian Economic Commission in December 2017. At least 12 months was set to adapt the business to new requirements.

«The previous technical regulations on food labeling have already obliged manufacturers to inform buyers about the use and content of GMOs (over 0.9 percent). However, they could indicate this information in small print and not in a strictly defined place, which did not always allow them to be noticed on the packaging,» EEC says.

Technical regulations require from GMO mark to be applied in a manner that provides its easy readability and visibility throughout the shelf life of food products.
