Ex-mayor of Bishkek Kubanychbek Kulmatov faces up to 20 years in prison

The ex-mayor of Bishkek, Kubanychbek Kulmatov, was finally charged. His lawyer Sergey Slesarev told 24.kg news agency.

According to the lawyer, his client is charged with corruption, but under part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic, meaning a criminal conspiracy. It provides for up to 20 years in prison.

Sergey Slesarev said that the procedure of familiarization with the case materials had begun, then they would be sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office, and then to the court. The lawyer noted unprecedented pressure on him as a lawyer on the part of the investigators of the State Committee for National Security and stressed that the charges were brought illegally.

According to investigators, in 2014, Kubanychbek Kulmatov, being the mayor of Bishkek, illegally used grant funds of $ 2 million for the construction of two schools.
