Human rights activists ask president to assist in reviewing Tekebayev’s case

Human rights activists and deputies appealed to the President of Kyrgyzstan Sooronbai Jeenbekov with a request to assist in reviewing the criminal case against Omurbek Tekebayev, the leader of Ata Meken party, and Duishenkul Chotonov, the former head of the Emergency Situations Ministry. The Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Committee on Law, Order, Fight against Crime and Corruption, deputy Natalia Nikitenko, told 24.kg news agency.

According to her, new grounds have appeared in connection with the entry into force of the new version of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code on January 1, in particular, the reduction of terms under the article corruption.

«Moreover, when considering Tekebayev-Chotonov case in the courts, the rules of the Criminal Procedure Code were grossly violated,» said Natalia Nikitenko.

Omurbek Tekebayev and Duishenkul Chotonov were sentenced to eight years in prison with confiscation of property. Courts of all instances found them guilty under the article corruption.

Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested a former State Duma deputy, the main witness in the case against Tekebayev-Chotonov, a businessman Leonid Maevsky. He was accused of extorting $ 37.5 million for non-proliferation of defamatory information. Leonid Maevsky faces up to 15 years in prison.
