Life after power: how former officials settled down abroad

Reports on career progress of the wife of the former Kyrgyz president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who lives in Belarus, aroused much interest: how and where fled from Kyrgyzstan VIPs settled down?

First wave. "Tulip" one

alt
Askar Akaev
is the first ousted president of the Kyrgyz Republic. He lives with his family in Moscow, has Russian citizenship. He is
academician at the Russian Academy of Sciences. His articles and interviews on various topics regularly appear in the press, including foreign.

altNikolay Tanaev - the last prime minister of Askar Akayev. He lives in St. Petersburg on Bolshaya Morskaya Street, 6. A few years ago, his apartment was robbed. The former prime minister told the police that the criminals took away 2.5 million rubles, jewelry and a computer.

Despite the fact that Nikolay Tanayev is on the international wanted list since 2005, in 2006 he became CEO of Gazpromneft-Invest LLC, established to implement in St. Petersburg the scandalous Gazprom-City project. At the time, Nikolay Tanaev is an advisor to the director general of Gazprom neft.

Another person, who has left the country after March 24, 2005, is the Minister of Defence (from August 1999 to March 24, 2005) Esen Topoev. He lives in Moscow. In August 2004, he was promoted to General of the Army, becoming the only Army General in the history of independent Kyrgyzstan. After the revolution, he resigned and left the country. The authorities of the Kyrgyz Republic did not bring any charges against him and he was not announced wanted. Now Esen Topoev is an adviser to general director of "Rosoboronexport".

Second wave. "April" one

Members of Kurmanbek Bakiyev's team also feel comfortable outside their homeland.

The very second ousted President of Kyrgyzstan, as you know, has settled down in Belarus. He, his son Marat and brother Janysh live in Minsk. All three have built up rich mansions and feel quite comfortable.

The second wife of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev Nazgul Tolomusheva by the decision of the Office of Presidential Affairs of the Republic of Belarus was appointed the director of the Republican Unitary Enterprise "Hotel Minsk". This is 4 stars hotel, located in the center of the Belarusian capital.

His younger son Maxim Bakiyev is under the protection of the Queen of Great Britain. He lives with his family in London. Journalistic Investigations Global Witness Center said earlier that Maxim Bakiyev had bought a mansion for 3.5 million pounds in Surrey (south-east of England).

However, the property is registered on an offshore company.  Maxim Bakiyev gave the address of the house as a place of his residence during the consideration of his extradition to the United States by the court. According to official documents, the house is owned by Limium Partners Limited, registered in the Central American state of Belize.

The company was established in June 2010, 15 days after the arrival of Maxim Bakiyev in Britain, and the house was purchased in August.

The last Prime Minister of Kurmanbek Bakiyev, Daniyar Usenov, also left the country after April 7, 2010. He lives in Almaty, often goes to the United Arab Emirates, where he has a property. His wife Dinara Isayeva still lives in Bishkek, doing a multimillion-dollar business. In 2015, she was newly elected deputy of the Parliament.

Saparbek Balkibekov
- Minister of Industry, Energy and Fuel Resources of Kyrgyzstan (2007-2009) - was one of the first who fled Kyrgyzstan after April events. In January 2011, the Interpol has informed about his detention in the city of Dublin (Ireland). According to one version, the ex-officer was in Ireland on business. Prosecutor General's Office of the Kyrgyz Republic stated that the question on Balkibekov's extradition is being solved. However, Ireland has refused to extradite him. The new authorities have promised a reward from $ 50,000 to $ 100,000 for information on the former official.

According to some reports, Saparbek Balkibekov, as Maxim Bakiyev, moved to the UK and acquired property, acting as a major investor.

alt
Aleksey Shirshov
- one of the closest friends of Maxim Bakiyev, the gray eminence in the field of Energy Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic. Having left Kyrgyzstan, he settled down in Ukraine. He often visits Russia and Israel. According to some reports, he continues consulting officials on the energy industry. In 2014, Aleksey Shirshov became a member of the political headquarters of the leader of the opposition faction "Udar" Vladimir Klitschko.

alt
Aleksey Eliseev
- personal lawyer of Maxim Bakiyev. He settled down with his family in one of the Baltic countries. He opened a law firm.

This list is not complete, but many of those close to the presidents behave themselves so quietly in new habitats that their life after power virtually does not come out into open.
