Former director general of PTRC, journalist Kubat Otorbaev elected Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan
A journalist, former director general of PTRC Kubat Otorbaev was elected an Ombudsman of Kyrgyzstan. His candidacy won 63 parliamentary votes in the secret ballot.++
Human rights activist Rita Karasartova won 26 votes of MPs, Alisher Mamasaliev - 26 votes of the parliament members. In general, 115 deputies participated in the voting.
Today, the Parliament for the second time this month elected the main human rights defender of the country. On December 10, even three rounds were not enough to choose an Ombudsman. Then the candidacy of Atyr Abdrakhmatova, who has passed all three rounds, gained only 46 votes in the final round.
This time, at least seven candidates were nominated for the post of Ombudsman, but four candidates withdrew their candidacies just before the voting. As a result, there were three candidates: former deputy of Parliament from Ak Zhol party Alisher Mamasaliev, human rights defender Rita Karasartova and former director general of the PTRC Kubat Otorbaev.
Former Ombudsman Bakytbek Amanbaev was early released from his post because on June 25, 2015 the Parliament declared unsatisfactory his report on the work done. The verdict, declared by the relevant Committee and three factions of the Parliament of the 5th convocation, was supported by the whole chamber.
