Kyrgyzstan joins UN Council on Human Rights

"After the parliamentary elections Kyrgyzstan got additional votes for representation in the United Nations Human Rights Council," Foreign Minister Erlan Abdyldaev said at a press conference.++

According to him, on October 28 New York hosted a plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly where the elections to the Human Rights Council were held. "Seven states from Pacific and Asian groups applied for five seats. First place went to Mongolia, the second - the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan received 147 votes and the third place. South Korea and the Philippines close the top five. Pakistan and Laos didn't pass.  We considerthis election as recognition of the achievements in the field of development of democracy and protection of human rights. Human Rights Council is one of the key UN councils," Erlan Abdyldaev said.

He added that the application was filed in 2013. "In September we had 106 votes, but after the parliamentary elections on October 4, we got more votes in our support," the Foreign Minister concluded.
