Commonwealth of Independent States turns 25

Commonwealth of Independent States turns 25. A quarter of a century ago, Belavezha Accords was signed.++

Commonwealth founded by the presidents of RSFSR, Belarus and Ukraine, having signed an agreement on establishing the CIS in Viskuli (Bialowieza Forest) on December 8, 1991.

The document stated that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) ceased to exist. On its basis the parties have agreed to create a new association - the CIS.

The presidents of the five Central Asian states of the Soviet Union: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan met in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) on December 13, 1991. The result was a statement in which the countries have agreed to enter into the organization. The only condition was to ensure the equal participation of the subjects of the disintegrated Union and the recognition of all the CIS states as founders.

Over 25 years the organization signed a lot of documents, but not all have been implemented. Because of this, the organization is often criticized. Its members have repeatedly talked about the need to reform the CIS.
