International human rights organization Freedom House released its annual report Freedom in the World 2017, in which Kyrgyzstan was ranked as "partly free" country for the sixth year in a row.++

Kyrgyzstan - along with the US, the Czech Republic, Iraq and Denmark - was also included in the list of countries that "may be approaching important turning points in their democratic trajectory."

"The term of President Almazbek Atambayev expires in late 2017, but recently approved constitutional amendments could pave the way for him to retain power by shifting to the prime minister's seat," the report says.

Uzbekistan, that has received 3 points in the ranking, has the worst indicators of freedom among the countries of Central Asia.  Turkmenistan got 4 points. Tajikistan (11 points) and Kazakhstan (22 points), as well as Russia, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Iran, were ranked among 49 "not free" countries.

The best political rights and civil liberties situation is in Finland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the Netherlands.

The main conclusion made by the experts of Freedom House: level of political and civil liberties around the world is declining for the tenth year in a row.

Freedom House rating covers 195 countries. All states are divided on the basis of political and civil liberties into three groups: free, partly free and not free.
