Former imam sentenced to 5 years in prison for extremist activity

Former imam Rashot Kamalov was sentenced to 5 years in prison for distribution of extremist materials. The officials of Kara-Suu court reported.

According to them, he will serve his sentence in a penal settlement.

Rashot Kamalov was accused of "inciting religious hatred through abuse of office" and "distribution of extremist materials during public events." During the trial it was established that there was no order appointing Kamalov the imam of As-Sarakhsiy mosque of Kara-Suu town among the documents of muftiat.

The court took this into account and reclassified the article of the charge, removing aggravating circumstance "abuse of official position." Lawyers are going to appeal the verdict.
