Bishkek to elect new mayor today

Deputies of Bishkek City Council will elect a mayor of the capital of Kyrgyzstan today. Two candidates - acting mayor of Bishkek Albek Ibraimov and temporarily unemployed Nurdin Abdyldaev are running for the post.++

The first one was nominated by the majority coalition, the second is the nominee of Onuguu-Progress opposition faction. Another faction, not a member of BCC majority coalition, Mekenim Kyrgyzstan and the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan did not use the right to nominate candidates for the post of mayor.

To become a mayor, a candidate has to win at least 23 votes out of 45.

Mayor is elected for the time in office of the current convocation of the Bishkek City Council, elections of which took place on December 11, 2016. People's representatives started working at the end of December last year.
