Aigul Japarova participates in forum on climate change

First Lady of Kyrgyzstan Aigul Japarova took part in the International Forum «Children and Youth in Action — Climate Change in Central Asia» in Tashkent at the invitation of the wife of the President of Uzbekistan Ziroat Mirziyoyeva. The press service of the president reported.

The event was also attended by the First Ladies of Uzbekistan, Turkey and Iran.

Aigul Japarova noted that Kyrgyzstan pays great attention to involving children and youth in addressing climate change issues. This work is carried out systematically and is reflected in the national strategic development documents.

She indicated that in accordance with the concept of youth policy of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2020-2030, priority attention should be paid to:

  • Providing opportunities for youth to develop their human potential;
  • Formation of youth as the main resource for the development of the state and society;
  • Encouraging youth initiatives in the political, economic and social spheres;
  • Formation of responsible attitude of young citizens towards their health, ancestral heritage, interaction with the outside world.

The First Lady stressed that children and youth are not only more vulnerable to climate change, but are also significant actors in achieving national climate goals.

«More than half of our country’s territory is located at an altitude from 1,000 to 3,000 meters, and the difficulties faced by residents of high mountain regions are well known to us. It is obvious that mountainous countries are at serious risk due to climate change, growing water scarcity, land degradation and natural disasters,» she noted.

At the same time, Aigul Japarova drew attention to the fact that the Kyrgyz side welcomes the support of the international community for climate change mitigation and adaptation in mountainous areas. The Kyrgyz Republic will continue its activities and remain the initiator of protection and support of mountain states, which require special attention of the international community.

«Through our efforts, in 2022, the 77th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Sustainable Mountain Development. On our initiative, this resolution declared 2023-2027 as the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions,» the First Lady of Kyrgyzstan said.
