UK imposes sanctions against Alina Kabaeva and Putin's ex-wife

UK has imposed sanctions on former gymnast Alina Kabaeva and 11 other people who, according to British authorities, are part of the inner circle of the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Foreign media report.

According to them, Kabaeva’s grandmother Anna Zatsepilina, Putin’s ex-wife Lyudmila Ocheretnaya, the president’s cousin Igor Putin and others (Yuri Shamalov, Mikhail Putin, Roman Putin, Viktor Khmarin, Vladimir Kolbin, Alexander Plekhov and Mikhail Klishin) also got on the sanctions list.

The sanctions target «a shady network that provides a luxurious lifestyle for Vladimir Putin.» «We will continue to impose sanctions on anyone who supports Putin’s aggression until Ukraine wins,» British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Liz Truss said.

Sanctions against Alina Kabaeva were demanded by associates of the opposition leader Alexei Navalny, pointing to her role in Russian propaganda and closeness to the head of the Russian Federation. Since 2014, the athlete has headed the Board of Directors of the National Media Group, which owns several popular TV channels, including a share in Channel One.
