SCNS of Kyrgyzstan: Askar Akayev faces new charges

Investigation in relation to the former president of Kyrgyzstan Askar Akayev is ongoing. The press center of the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) reported.

Moreover, according to the information of the committee, Askar Akayev was charged with conclusion of a general agreement with the Cameco company in 1992 and restructuring of the Kumtor project in 2003.

Askar Akayev fully admitted his guilt in committing the crimes and is actively cooperating with the investigation, and his departure from the country is preliminarily agreed with the investigator, as well as his arrival in Bishkek.

«Investigation of the criminal case continues, other facts of crimes related to the implementation of the Kumtor project are being established. A legal assessment will be given based on the results of the actions of the defendants in the case. Information about dismissal of the criminal case against Askar Akayev does not correspond to reality,» the state committee informed.

The former president said earlier that all charges against him were dropped.

Askar Akayev arrived in the capital again on December 14. He already came to Kyrgyzstan in August. After the interrogation by the SCNS, the former president entered into a plea bargain and made a confession. The second time he was also interrogated by the special services within the Kumtor case.
