Over 70 HIV-infected health care workers registered in Kyrgyzstan

At least 72 HIV-infected health care workers were registered in Kyrgyzstan. Director General of the Republican AIDS Center Umutkan Chokmorova informed 24.kg new agency.

"They are registered since 2002. Investigation found out that all of them got HIV through sexual contacts, i.e. nosocomial infection among health care workers is excluded. According to government regulation, they are suspended from the work that is associated with blood, they do not make injections, are not permitted to perform operations, but can work as family doctors," Umutkan Chokmorova explained.

 She noted that there are no cases of nosocomial infection since 2012 in the republic. "Infection control is strictly observed," head of the center noted.

According to the data as of January 1, 2016, the republic has 6,402 registered HIV-positive persons, 6,110 of them - citizens of the Kyrgyz Republic, including 554 children. There are 831 AIDS patients. At least 1,343 HIV-positive people have died for the years. At least 51.5 percent (3,148) of the people living with HIV are injecting drugs addicts. There is an increase in the incidence of HIV infection among women, as well as the facts of sexual transmission of HIV. Number of cases of HIV transmission from mother to child has also increased.

In 2015, there were detected 605 HIV-positive individuals, the main part of them are people at working and reproductive age (20-39 years - 67.1 percent).

At least 2,105 people living with HIV, including 387 children, get antiretroviral therapy.

Republic is provided in full with antiretroviral drugs, they are purchased through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
