Over 10,000 Kyrgyzstanis suffer from animal bites for 9 months of 2015

At least 10,305 Kyrgyzstanis, who suffered from animal bites, visited a doctor for 9 months of 2015. Press service of the Department of Disease Prevention and Sanitary Inspection informed.

According to it, the largest number of the injured is in Jalal-Abad region (2,461), Bishkek (2,276), as well as in Osh (1, 427) and Chui (1,500) regions. In Batken region 929 people suffered from the bites, in Talas - 357, Issyk-Kul - 610, Naryn region - 221, in Osh - 523. Nearly a half - (45.9 percent, or 4,740 cases) are children under 14 years.

Most often the people are attacked by a dog (84 percent), then rat / mouse (5.7 percent), cats (4.6 percent), as well as horses, donkeys and pigs (2.8 percent). The share of cattle attacks is 1.6 percent, small cattle - 0.7 percent, wild animals (wolves and foxes) - 0.6 percent.

For 9 months 5,504 bitten persons, or 53.4 percent of all victims, have been vaccinated against rabies.

"Late treatment after animal bites, and non-receipt of the appropriate course of vaccination against rabies can have adverse effects. An example is the death from rabies (hydrophobia) of a 72-year-old resident of Kara-Buura district, Talas region in August 2015. Having been bitten by a jackal, he turned to the medics for help only after the clinical manifestations of the disease, when the paramedics were not able to provide the necessary aid," experts warn and call for timely visits to physicians.
