Tajikistan unilaterally denounces agreement with Kyrgyzstan on simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship

Tajikistan unilaterally denounced the agreement with Kyrgyzstan on a simplified procedure for obtaining citizenship, Tajikistan's media reported.

According to it, at the closing meeting of the second session of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of the Majlisi Oli of Tajikistan of the fifth convocation, deputies of the lower house of parliament without discussion unanimously denounced signed in 2002 agreement with the Kyrgyz Republic on the facilitation of the acquisition of nationality. Also was denounced signed in 2004 agreement between the two countries on giving citizens of the Republic of Tajikistan the right of withdrawal citizenship under the simplified procedure of the Republic of Tajikistan and granting them the right to a simplified procedure to acquire the nationality of the Kyrgyz Republic.

As the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Makhmadsharif Khakdod pointed out in his speech, the above-mentioned agreements have fulfilled their goals and objectives, future of the country of citizenship acquisition and release issues will be regulated by the law of Tajikistan "On Citizenship" dated 2015.

According to the speaker of the lower house of parliament Shukurjon Zuhurov, Dushanbe and Bishkek have no agreement on dual citizenship.

"The existence of the above-mentioned agreements may create problems in dealing with cross-border issues with Kyrgyzstan," the speaker said.
