Republican School of Olympic Reserve: Alma mater of champions or organized criminal groups?

Another incident involving students of the Republican School of Olympic Reserve (RSOR) again raised the issue of its closure. Work of RSOR was suspended until November 9. Its director Muratbek Kybraev was removed from office. Interdepartmental commission is studying the causes of the incident. Participants of the incident were detained, a criminal case was initiated.

A pile of unsolved problems

This is not the first incident. Old-timers remember that as far back as in the 2000s and 1990s, the students of the school have already damaged their reputation a little bit. The last incident occurred just a month ago. The State Agency of Physical Culture and Sports has taken measures: dismissed three deputy directors, expelled four 10-graders. Alas, it did not have any effect.

The problem is that the guys from the regions come to study in RSOR already having a certain moral base. There is a lack of education. We can devote a lot of publications to the life in remote areas of Kyrgyzstan. Parents, who are busy with the search of living, do not always pay attention at their children. Having been brought up in poverty, often in single-parent families, they are not ready for an independent life. Having arrived in the capital, they form groups and engage in doubtful activities.

Another problem is the personnel. There are some enthusiasts among the trainers, but there are also those who are just going through the motions. They just take their comfortable and profitable posts and do not pay attention to their students. And the latter, having no mentor and a good example to follow, take a dangerous path. "At least 99.9 percent replacement of school's personnel is required. We have to announce a competition for all the positions. There are a lot of people wishing to work there, there is just such a corruption scheme! Can you imagine, the school serves free meals four times a day and provides free accommodation. Salary of coaches is up to 60,000 soms," former head of the State Agency of Physical Culture and Sports told to 24.kg news agency.

"We need to raise the professional level of teachers. RSOR is the main link in the training of sportsmen for teams of the Kyrgyz Republic, and the best specialists of the country should work there. There are some students at the school, who have been enrolled there by pulling strings. Seven years in a row they are fed by the state having no sports prospects. True talents have to study there," Kadyrbek Ergeshov said in an interview with 24.kg news agency when being   RSOR director. He headed the school for some time, but has not managed to turn the tide.

But there are talents

The abolition of RSOR would be the most short-sighted solution. There are also experts, the real fans of their profession. They did not leave Kyrgyzstan in hard times and now they are training talented athletes. RSOR students often take the lead at national competitions. Compared with those who train in the regions, they have been created relatively good conditions. Representatives of martial arts are especially successful. For example, recently exactly RSOR student won bronze award- the only for national team- at the world championship among cadets in freestyle wrestling.

So we should not generalize and say that the entire school is a hotbed of crime. There are those who are the pride of our motherland. Good athletes have no time for nonsense.

Sports boarding schools are the best basis for focused training of champions. Model of training in them is not new, but it meets the modern requirements and is popular in the world, for example, in China - the largest sports power. Trainers there are looking for promising athletes in the most remote villages, negotiate with their parents, and they give their offspring to them for training. Children live in a boarding school all year long, learn according to the school curriculum and train. They are provided with everything necessary. Our RSOR has also to work according to this scheme. However, young talents and experienced trainers in Kyrgyzstan have much less finances. We can only dream of the results that the Chinese have.

Where is it, the wisdom of Solomon?

It is dangerous to leave the school as it is. The incidents will repeat. One may blame the directors as long as they like and to dismiss them, but nothing will change. The dismissed head has been appointed a year and a half ago. It is difficult to solve systemic problems that pilled up over decades during this time. But the reforms should be carried put.

"RSOR is alma mater of organized criminal groups so far but we have to do something. Apparently, to change the profile. Now the students there are trained mainly in martial arts. Maybe it would be better to engage them in a "peaceful" sport - the same chess? Such proposals are being voiced, and I support them," the mother of a student at the school №38 said.

"May be it is necessary to clean up the ranks of the students. To expel weak students and more strictly control the coaches and teachers. The coach plays a big role. But closure of the school is a nonsense, while all the CIS countries are developing the sports," coach in gymnastics Alexander Tkachuk said.

Now it's up to the director of the State Agency for Physical Culture and Sports Sheyshenkul Bakirov, who must have the will. We can try to optimize costs, reduce the number of sports cultivated in RSOR, and may reduce the number of students in order to see there the best athletes but not those who were sent from the regions by their indifferent parents.
